The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has focused on increasing the participation of women in its workforce and integrating women into non-traditional military roles. The Navy, for example, has committed to a female participation target of 25% by 2023.
The Women in Australian Defence Force Report 2014–2015 shows that the overall proportion of female ADF officers nationally rose to 18.8%. After concerted efforts to improve women’s prospects in leadership roles, the proportion of female officers in the senior leadership group rose from 10.7% in 2013–2014 to 10.9% (1 woman). The total number of women in the permanent ADF, located in WA, was 16% as at 30 June 2015
Despite significant commitment at a senior level to achieve gender equality, progress has been slower than anticipated, which is similar in experience to a number of other non-Defence related sectors.
